First Nations Trust
The First Nations Trust Fund was established as a not-for-profit corporation in 1999. It represents a significant opportunity for the Mi’kmaw of Newfoundland and Labrador to ensure that they continue to benefit from their cultural practices, history and language.
The distinctive heritage of the Mi’kmaw, and their status as Aboriginal people, has found expression in both social and economic fields. The culture of Canada ’s First Peoples plays a significant role in eco and cultural tourism. In order for this role to continue, the practices, traditions and language which make up this culture must be preserved and enhanced. This is the task that the First Nations Trust Fund has accepted.
The First Nations Trust Fund partners with appropriate governments, organizations, and corporate interests and establishes relationships with and government organizations to ensure strong programming and financial foundations.
The Trust serves as a resource to aboriginal entrepreneurs through the provision of accurate information on history, traditions, language and practices. It also certifies the materials used by aboriginal and non-aboriginal entrepreneurs and agencies. The result of this support strengthens the socio-economic and cultural future of the Mi’kmaw of Newfoundland and Labrador .
